Eagles split at own volleyball tournament

BU goes 2-2 over weekend at Eagle Classic

The Benedictine University's volleyball team split its games at its own Eagle Classic tournament over the weekend, going 2-2, and finshing in third place out of six teams. The Eagles are now 16-15 overall.

Benedictine will next host a first round match in the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) tournament on Tuesday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. Due to rennovation construction at the Eagles' Rice Center, the match will be played at the College of DuPage.

At the Eagle Classic - which was played at nearby North Central College's faciltiy - Benedictine lost to North Central, 3-1 (14-25, 30-28, 20-25, 22-25) and defeated Monmouth, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-20) on Friday evening.  On Saturday, BU opened with a sweep over Grinnell College, 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) and lost to Wheaton College, 3-1 (20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 22-25) in the tournament's finale.

Junior returning All-American honorable mention player Kayla Leyden was named to the all-tournament team.  Leyden, one of the national leaders in kills per set, raised her numbers even higher during the Eagle Classic by averaging 4.71 kills per set. She also produced on the defensive half by making 4.68 digs per set.

It was Leyden's fourth all-tournament honor of the season in as many events participated in by the Eagles' team.

In the loss to NCC, senior Sarah Porod added nine kills.  Jackie Rust had 25 digs and Jessic Judge had 17 assists.

Freshman Miranda Brannen chipped in eight kills and two blocks in the Monmouth win.  Judge gave off 19 assists and Rust had 18 digs.

In the win over Grinnell, Brannen and Porod each had eight kills.  Porod also had three blocks. Setters Taylor Hoppe and Judge had 19 and 16 assists, respectively.

Three BU players had double-digit kill totals in the Wheaton loss.  Joining Leyden with 14 kills was Porod, while Brannen knocked down 12 kills. Judge had 24 assists and Rust dug 23 balls.
