Box Score
Benedictine's women's soccer team enjoyed a breakout performance versus Lakeland College on Saturday with a 5-1 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) win at The Sports Complex. For the Eagles (1-3, 1-0 NAC), a home match proved to be a welcome respite after opening the season with three straight shutout losses on the road.
"I was very pleased with the effort put forth by our team today," said Benedictine head coach Robyn Serge. "We had struggled in the early going this season and today was a good test on how we would respond to adversity. I felt the key factors were that we did not play as tentative as we had in those first matches - which may have been due to our young lineup - and we also seemed to dictate the flow of the match to where we wanted it.
"That opened up the game and created the scoring opportunities. We still have a way to go as a team, but this is the type of win we can build upon as we look ahead on the schedule."
Freshman
Rachel Wilson had a huge day for Benedictine and may have provided a glimpse of things to come from the Eagles' young roster.
Wilson tallied the first two goals of the match to provided all of the offense her team would eventually need for the day. However, Wilson did not stop there as she then assisted on the Eagles' next three goals to give her a hand - or at least a foot - in all five tallys by Benedictine.
BU led 1-0 at halftime when Wilson converted an unassisted goal in the 31st minute. Just a little over three minutes into the second half, Wilson made it 2-0 off an assist from
Carissa Jenkins at the 48:06 juncture that started a goal-scoring avalanche by Benedictine.
Just 39 seconds later, freshman
Ale Farias chalked up her first goal as an Eagle to make it 3-0. That was followed by sophomore midfielder
Alyssa Rubio, who punched in a goal at the 49:30 mark to give the Eagles three goals in a span of 1:24 minutes of the second half and break the match open.
That trifecta of goals by Benedictine ranks as the fourth-lowest time elapsed for three consecutive goals scored by a team in NCAA Division III women's soccer history.
Lakeland scored its lone goal in the 52nd minute of play before junior
Carly Madison made it the 5-1 final score with her net-finder in the 65th minute.
Goalkeeper
Melissa Hernandez turned away four shots on goal by the Muskies. The offensive pressure by the Benedictine kept the game in Lakeland's half for much of the day as the Eagles held a 23-9 advantage in shot attempts.
