Box Score
It may have been one of - if not the - most gut-wrenching ways that the Benedictine University men's soccer team could have lost its non-conference match versus Lake Forest College. An "own goal" by the Eagles (3-5) in the second overtime gave Lake Forest College the 1-0 win.
While it adds an out-of-league loss to the Benedictine coffers, it can't take away what was a brilliant effort by the Eagles' defense. Junior goalkeeper
Orlando Esparza - making just his second start as an Eagle - had four saves (all in the first half of play). From that point on the BU defenders, led by
Ryan Ponomar,
Creighton Goss and
Franco Merenda, who did the bulk of the work in keeping the Foresters at bay.
The "own goal" - which also proved to be the lone goal of the match - came in the second segment of overtiem, after the two teams had battled to a scoreless draw through regulation and the first OT session. At the 105:16 minute mark fo the match, LFC's Dorvio Nelson centered a ball in front of the Eagles' net, but the pass was inadvertently redirected into the BU goal when it went off a Benedictine defender.
