Box Score - vs. Monmouth

The Benedictine University men's soccer team split a pair of Labor Day Weekend road matches by topping Knox College, 4-3, on Friday and absorbing its first loss of 2009 at Monmouth College on Saturday, 3-0. The Eagles are now 2-1 overall.

Giancarlo Chavez tallied his first goal of the year to open scoring against Knox in the 8th minute, with an assist to Ryan Kozin. However, the host Prairie Fire roared back to life and tied the game in the 39th minute, and taking the lead in the 60th minute, 2-1.

In the 71st minute of play, the Eagles knotted the match at 2-2 when Jeff Bernstein netted the first goal of his Benedictine career off of a corner kick by Kozin.

Another newcomer - Cesar Martinez - took control of the match and gave Benedictine the win with a pair of late goals. In the 82nd minute, Martinez redirected a corner kick by Carl Kerber past Knox goalie Max Miller for what would prove to be the match-winning goal. Then, just six minutes later, Martinez took a pass from Kozin and blasted home an insurance goal for the Eagles for the 4-2 final score.

Knox out-shot Benedictine, 18-14, but Eagles' goalkeeper Jim Hanley registered eight saves in picking up his second-consecutive win of 2009.

Versus Monmouth, it was a different story as the Eagles found themselves statistically dominated in suffering the 3-0 loss. The Scots had 20 shot attempts, 16 of which were on goal, as a busy Hanley had 13 saves on the afternoon.

Conversely, the Benedictine team managed just four shot attempts.
