Men's Soccer Closes With Win

Box Score

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team posted a 5-1 road win over Rockford in the season finale on Wednesday afternoon.

Benedictine left no doubt early, striking twice in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Edgar Reyes opened the scoring by heading home a cross from Julio Lopez in the eighth minute. Creighton Goss scored in the 17th minute on a cross from Alberto Mendez.

Two more tallies late in the half stretched the margin to 4-0 at the intermission. Eric Selcke finished off a nice sequence with a header off a pair of passes from Matt Ahrens and Reyes in the 35th minute. Ahrens was able to score in the 39th minute on a pass from Reyes.

Rockford struck for a goal early in the second but Mendez secured the win with an exclamation point on the season with a successful penalty kick in the 87th minute. The Eagles held a 16-6 edge in shots with Zorohn Reed stopping three shots in goal.

The win officially capped the first season under head coach Rich Nassif.

"I have to commend the way this team stuck with it all year," Nassif said. "We were one different result away from finishing in the same slot as last year. We have a lot to build upon for the future. We will bring it together as a team and breakdown what we can build on as a team for the future. The never ending effort and the character of this group comes back to the senior class. It was great to have the seniors walk off with a win."
