RIPON, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team faced a stiff test in Wisconsin to open the season, falling to perennial power Chicago 59-45.
Benedictine led only once in the game.
Vincenza Ranallo buried a three with 11:41 to play in the first half to hand the Eagles a 10-9 edge. Chicago, who reached the Sectional Round of last year's NCAA Tournament, stretched the lead to double digits late in the half, but the Eagles closed to within a point on two occasions, trailing 29-28 at the half.
Michelle Batty's three on the first offensive possession of the second half knotted the score at 31-31 but again Chicago was able to pull in front by double digits, holding Benedictine to just 21 percent shooting in the second half.
Ranallo was the lone player to score in double figures, netting a game and career high 16 points. The Eagles held a 39-30 edge on the glass.
Katie Hunzinger snared a game high eight boards.
The Eagles (0-1) will face the host Ripon at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
