Men's Hoops Captures Conference Opener

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team opened conference play with a 51-47 road win over Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday evening.

Trailing 46-45 in the final minute, Tim McGinty played hero for the Eagles, splashing home a go ahead three-pointer from the left corner with :39 remaining to halt a two-game slide. The three was the lone make of the day from the field for McGinty, who finished with seven points.

Benedictine led for almost the entire first half in the defensive struggle with Concordia Chicago only tying the score once at 10-10. The Eagles held an eight-point edge at the break, 26-18. holding the hosts to just five makes from the field.

The Eagles were able to open a 10-point lead early in the second half and continued to lead throughout until a 12-3 run for Concordia allowed the Cougars to nab a three-point lead. Michael Woolf trimmed into the deficit with a jumper at the 1:15 mark prior to McGinty's make, which followed a turnover.

Drake Danford came off the bench to net 12 points, tying for game high honors. Jamison Montgomery added nine.

Benedictine (2-3, 1-0) appears in front of the home fans for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon with a 4:15 p.m. contest against Lakeland, the preseason favorite in the North. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women, who tip at 2:00 p.m.
