LISLE, Ill. - Despite hitting 16 three-pointers, the Benedictine University men's basketball team was unable to surge past Lakeland in its home opener.
The contest featured several outstanding individual performances as Lakeland's Justin Ward netted a game high 32 points with Jake Schwarz adding 21.
Michael Woolf registered a double-double for Benedictine with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Woolf hit seven threes in the matchup.
Lakeland embarked on an 11-1 run late in the first half that put the Muskies up double digits at 36-26. Benedictine was able to pull within one early in the second half with an 8-2 run capped by a pair of
Alex Edmondson free throws.
Trailing 55-53, Benedictine allowed Lakeland to score 12 unanswered to open a 14-point lead with 8:44 to play. The Eagles battled to within 83-76 in the final minute but could get no closer.
Drake Danford came off the bench to net 17 points while
Raphael Oglesby contributed 12.
Benedictine (2-4, 1-1) has a short turnaround with a Monday non-conference date at home against North Park. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
