LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team saw a six-game win streak against rival Aurora University come to an end with a 79-65 defeat in front of a packed crowd on Thursday night.
The first half featured end-to-end action along with five ties and eight lead changes. Benedictine shot only 28.6 percent in the first half, but was able to lead by as many as seven points when
Luke Johnson converted on a layup with 8:53 left in the half. Aurora used an 11-2 run to grab the lead again and held a 33-31 edge at the break.
The opening six minutes of the second half kept the game close but a 7-0 run allowed Aurora to open a double-digit lead at 52-41 with 12:05 to play. Four straight points from
John Dodson brought Benedictine within 60-55 with 7:41 to play but Aurora again closed the door, leading by as many as 19 points to pull away.
Johnson and
Raphael Oglesby paced Benedictine with 12 points apiece while Dodson added 11. The bench tallied 37 points for Benedictine. The Eagles could not overcome 18 turnovers and shot just 31.7 percent for the game. Despite holding a 51-37 advantage on the glass, Benedictine was outscored in the paint 40-28. The Eagles had also not lost to Aurora at home since the 2009 conference tournament.
Benedictine (4-14, 2-7 NAC) will hit the road for four consecutive contests beginning on Saturday afternoon at MSOE in a 4:15 p.m. contest.
