Men's Hoops Reaches NAC Tourney on Senior Night

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team claimed its fourth consecutive victory, topping Rockford 75-64 on senior night. The win, coupled with a Wisconsin Lutheran loss, places Benedictine in the conference tournament for the third consecutive season.

Benedictine led wire-to-wire in the contest. The Eagles opened the contest by scoring nine consecutive points, grabbing a 9-0 lead with 16:27 to play in the half. Four different individuals recorded baskets during the run. Rockford was able to pull within two points before 12-2 run opened with a jumper from Raphael Oglesby, honored before the game on senior night, extended the lead to 22-10 just past the midway point of the half.

Benedictine limited Rockford to just 24.2 percent shooting in the first half and led by as many as 17 points following a three from Michael Woolf late in the half. The Eagles held a 40-27 edge at the break.

Rockford came on strong in the second half, using a 14-0 run to pull within 51-48 with 12:02 left in the game. The visitors reaming down by three points before a Dan Montano layup and three from Alex Edmondson stretched the margin to eight points. The three was the lone basket of the game for Edmondson.

Rockford continued to pull within three points but could never turn the corner. Leading 64-61 with 4:37 to play, Benedictine used a 9-1 run to hold a 73-62 lead on a pair of free throws from Woolf.

Four players scored in double figures for Benedictine. Woolf led the way with 15, Luke Johnson added 13 to go with eight rebounds while Dale Renshaw contributed a season high 11. Tim McGinty also added 10. Jamison Montgomery dished seven assists in his final home game.

Benedictine (8-17, 6-10) will be the seventh seed in the conference tournament and opens at Aurora on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Benedictine finished in a three-way tie with Rockford and Wisconsin Lutheran but earned the tiebreaker over Wisconsin Lutheran, who lost seven of their final nine games.
