LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team saw its 2012-13 season come to a close in the opening round of the conference tournament with an 87-67 loss at Aurora University.
Benedictine never led in the contest. Aurora used a 7-0 run to jump in front by double figures at 24-13 with 9:29 to play in the first half. The hosts went on to lead by as many as 18 points in the half and held a 44-31 lead at the break.
The Eagles used an 8-0 run early in the second half to claw within eight points.
Luke Johnson opened the run with a layup while
Raphael Oglesby capped the stretch to pull Benedictine within 58-50 with 12:20 to play. Aurora (20-6), the second seed in the tournament, quickly extended the advantage to 19 points and led by as many as 22 late to advance in the tourney. The Spartans won all three meetings with Benedictine this season.
Dale Renshaw paced Benedictine with a season and career high 15 points. Renshaw registered double figures in each of the final two games this season. Three other individuals also scored in double figures.
Tim McGinty netted 14 points while
John Dodson and Johnson each tallied 10. Johnson also reeled in a game high 12 rebounds as Benedictine finished +4 on the glass in the defeat. The contest marked the fourth time in 11 contests that Johnson recorded north of 10 boards. The Eagles shot just 33.3 percent in the contest.
Benedictine, who won four straight at the end of the season to qualify for the tournament, closed the season with a record of 8-18.
