BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team continued its tough non-conference slate by falling 3-0 at Illinois Wesleyan University on Sunday night.
"I'm proud of the way our guys came out tonight," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "We really battled the first half, withstanding the first 10-15 minutes of pressure they put on us. After that we played some positive soccer for the remainder of the half and had control of the game for spells."
The first 45 minutes saw neither side score in a very even half. Benedictine had some solid chances but couldn't strike. Illinois Wesleyan scored the first goal in the 60th minute, heading home a corner kick. The host Titans finished off the match by scoring twice in the final nine minutes to put the contest away.
"In the second half we were caught on our heels and they really pressed us in our end," Nassif added. "We struggled to keep the ball and suffered a set piece goal that would end up being the winner."
Despite accumulating just five shots, Benedictine had five corner kicks.
Lupe Martinez put two shots on goal while
Matt Ahrens also added two shots, though none on target.
Zorohn Reed made five stops in goal.
"I thought our back line played well tonight, the organization and effort they showed for most of the game was that of a winning performance," Nassif said. "We continue to find our rhythm in the middle and attacking thirds, but need that to come along quicker."
