Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss

Box Score

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-1 at Carthage on Wednesday night.

"Tonight was a good challenge for us against a strong and athletic Carthage team, a program who won the CCIW in 2011," said head coach Rich Nassif. "I did not think we put our best foot forward and was disappointed with our showing. We cannot afford to give up three goals on basic mistakes when we're playing a team of Carthage's caliber, particularly on the road."

Edgar Reyes struck for the lone goal in the 65th minute. Carthage opened a 3-0 lead, scoring twice six minutes apart midway through the first.

"Facing a team that played as direct as Carthage really put our backline under pressure," stated Nassif. "It's something we don't see that often, but for the most part our guys handled it well enough to keep us in the game. It just comes back to those silly mistakes. But credit our guys for showing some resolve and making it 3-1. There were segments of that second half where the game opened up and we seemed one play away from getting to 3-2."

Zorohn Reed played the first half in goal for the Eagles. Benedictine (1-1) managed just three shots in the defeat.

"We will learn from this. We need to tighten some things up in the back, make opponents earn their goals a bit more," added Nassif. "We need to continue strengthening our commitment to the brand of soccer we play. But I know we will come out with more focus and conviction when we host Chicago on Alumni Day this Saturday."
