MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's soccer team ended the year with a 4-2 loss to Alverno on Tuesday afternoon.
Benedictine created an opportunity early with a corner kick, but Alverno struck first in the 17th minute. The Eagles turned on the pressure, creating many opportunities to potentially tie the game. Following eight shots,
Allison Lambert knotted the game by banging home a header on a corner kick from
Danielle Melotte in the 38th minute. Alverno strung together a few shots before the half but could not score. A last ditch attempt from
Taylor Pokorny was denied.
Alverno posted four straight shots to open the second after a pair of Benedictine attempts. After having an attempt hit the crossbar and another blocked, the hosts struck on a corner kick to grab a 2-1 edge in the 55th minute. Just over a minute later the margin reached 3-1 on a strike from 20 yards away. Benedictine did not go away, pulling within 3-2 in the 74th minute. Pokorny poked home a cross on a free kick from Melotte. Benedictine recorded three straight chances late, but with the pressure on allowed a counter for an insurance goal in the 89th minute.
The Eagles held a 19-18 edge in shots with 12 going on goal. Melotte, Pokorny and
Lynzi Misuraca notched four shots each.
Amanda Lozada stopped four shots in goal.
Benedictine finished the first season under Boland with a record of 4-14-1.
