The Benedictine University men's track and field team competed in the Illinois Wesleyan University Titan Open on Saturday. BenU placed sixth in the event.
"I'm very proud of our effort today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Kevin Paterson. "We had a goal to improve our national and conference marks, which is exactly what we did."
One of those improvements came from sprinter
Marcus Griffith, as the Chicago native who won NACC Player of the Week in the team's previous meet, picked up right where he left off. After setting a school record at Carthage two weeks ago, Griffith set a new 60m hurdles record at 8.34s, winning the event. He also performed well in the 200m, placing 19th at 24.09s.
Also on the track,
Chris Dziagwa performed well, placing 13th in the 400m at 52.43s. In addition,
Joe Chavez placed 15th in the mile at 4:34.71.
Benedictine also earned key contributions from its throwers.
Eric Kenebrew placed second in the weight throw (16.21m) and seventh in the shot put (14.58m), while
Joe DeMaegd placed fourth (15.84m) and 11th (13.31m) in the same two events.
Gerald Valenzuela also stood out in the shot put, placing fifth at 14.92m.
In the high jump,
Billy Sipek also had a strong meet. The senior placed third with a mark of 1.90m.
The Eagles are back in action on February 7 when the team competes at Olivet Nazarene University in the ONU Quad.
