After qualifying three athletes for nationals in the indoor season, the Benedictine University men's track and field team opened the outdoor season on Saturday at the Knox College Outdoor Invite. Competing a limited number of athletes, the Eagles placed eighth in the event.
On the track,
Joe Chavez stood out in distance events. The freshman won the 5000m event, clocked with a time of 15:20.88.
Sam Venezia also was strong in the 5000m, placing 13th at 16:54.96. In the 1500m, both
Chris Dziagwa (tenth, 4:30.81) and
Christian Estrada (14
th, 4:40.73) competed well.
Joe DeMaegd competed in three throws for BenU, placing in the top ten in each. He finished second in the hammer throw (48.80m), fourth in the discus (43.14m), and sixth in the shot put (12.40m).
"I'm very happy with our effort today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Kevin Paterson. "We traveled a small group because of the weather, but our competing student-athletes really stepped it up.
Joe DeMaegd performed well in the throws, and our distance runners, led by
Joe Chavez, looked great."
BenU is back in action on Thursday at Wheaton College.
