Kenebrew, Sipek, Griffith to Compete at Nationals

The Benedictine University men's track and field team has qualified three different student-athletes for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships this weekend. Billy Sipek, Eric Kenebrew, and Marcus Griffith will all make the trip to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to compete on Friday and Saturday.

The meet's top eight finishers in each event will receive All-American honors, and Paterson believes all three qualifiers has a chance to do so. Sipek, who was an All-American last indoor season, heads into the weekend tied for sixth place in the high jump on the national leaderboard with his school record 2.09m mark at the Olivet Nazarene University Invite on February 7.

"Billy has had some very consistent weeks after his breakout performance at ONU," said Sipek. "He achieved 2.03m this past weekend, which is a bit under what earned him an All-American award last year. At sixth, he's right around where he finished last year. The goal for him is to become a two-time All-American, and I really think he is on track to accomplish that."

After a strong indoor season in both the weight throw and shot put, Kenebrew qualifies for nationals. His school record of 18.11m in the weight throw at the Olivet Nazarene University Qualifier on February 21 ranks him 14th nationally heading into the meet.

"Eric progressed very well throughout the season, as we saw his mark rise from 15 meters up to over 18 meters," explained Paterson. "This week, we scratched a few big throws, and I think that will give him a lot of confidence to bring home some All-American awards. He has been very consistent and had some really nice practices, and he can really push reaching those finals and possibly be an All-American as well."

Griffith heads to North Carolina as the 15th and final qualifier for the 60m hurdles, with his school record of 7.61s in the 55m hurdles at the NACC Indoor Championship on February 28 earning him the nod.

"Marcus has been extremely consistent, winning the first three meets of the season and continually breaking his school record," said Paterson. "He's looked really good, and even though he's going in as the 15th and final qualifier, I think he has the ability to surprise some people and reach the finals on Saturday."

This is the not the first time the three athletes will compete at the Division III Championships. Griffith and Kenebrew competed at the Outdoor Championships last Spring, with Griffith placing 10th in the 110m hurdles and Kenebrew placing 15th in the discus. Sipek is heading to a Division III Championship meet for a third time, as he placed seventh in the high jump inthe Indoor Championships last March and 13th in the 2013 Outdoor Championships.

This year's championships will take place in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on Friday and Saturday at the JDL Fast Track. A full schedule for Eric, Marcus, and Billy is below, as well as additional meet information.
