CHICAGO, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's soccer team opened the season with a 1-0 road win over the Illinois Institute of Technology on Tuesday.
Benedictine strung together plenty of opportunities in the opener, eventually breaking through late in the second half. With just over 10 minutes remaining,
Taylor Pokorny dribbled through a set of defenders on a long run, finding the back of the net. The Eagles totaled 16 shots in the second half and 27 for the contest.
"It's nice to get a win to start the season," head coach
Mike Boland said. "As a group, we had constant belief the goal would come after numerous solid chances. This group has done a terrific job of maintaining focus one day and one game at a time."
Zoie Holloway totaled seven shots in the contest, which reversed a loss from last year. Pokorny added six with
Daniela Nieto and
Sabie Ramirez each tallying three.
Amanda Lozada played the entire game in net, facing seven shots and making three saves in the shutout.
Benedictine (1-0) travels to Lawrence on Friday.
