AURORA, IL - The Benedictine University football team concluded the 2016 season with a 28-27 overtime loss at Aurora University, losing on a blocked extra-point.
Benedictine did not lead in the game, forcing overtime with a 21-yard touchdown pass from
Ryan Sample to
Elijah Walker with just 4:53 remaining in the game. The score capped a quick three-play drive after the defense stopped Aurora on fourth down deep in Benedictine territory. Sample hit Walker for another big-gainer on the drive.
Aurora used a 13-play drive to begin the game with a touchdown, opening a 7-0 advantage. Benedictine instantly responded, using just six plays to even the game. Walker reeled in a 24-yard pass to set up a one-yard dive from
Luke Ludolph at the 4:06 mark of the first quarter.
The hosts struck on the first drive of the second quarter and stopped Benedictine following a 15-play drive that did not produce any points. The defense halted Aurora twice in a one-yard to go situation, taking over deep on the Aurora side.
Derrick Miles scooted in from five yards out to tie the game at 14-14 with 1:38 remaining in the first half.
Benedictine drove deep but could not put points on the board to open the second half. Aurora moved ahead again with just over four minutes left in the third before the late quarter drive from Benedictine. Benedictine had an opportunity to score again late but stalled at the Aurora 39-yardline.
Jack Nudo intercepted Aurora's last gasp in regulation.
Aurora had the ball to open overtime and scored a touchdown.
Derrick Miles tallied his second touchdown of the day by racing in from 12 yards out, creating an opportunity to send the game to a second overtime before a blocked extra-point ended the contest.
Sample finished the game by completing 22 passes for 284 yards, setting a single season conference record with a 3,299 yards passing. Walker caught eight passes for 127 yards to finish one of the top seasons by a receiver in school history. Miles carried 15 times for 62 yards.
Scottie Bobeck led the defense with 14 tackles.
Jarrett Lecas finished his career with 12 stops while
Zach Agunod notched 11. The contest marked the second overtime game of the year, both defeats. Benedictine finished with 352 total yards and closed the year with a 6-4 record in the first year under head coach
Josiah Sears.
