Men's Soccer Upends #7 Carthage in NCAA Tourney

KENOSHA, WI - The Benedictine University men's soccer team received a goal from Drew Schmucker on a penalty kick with 1:33 left in the second overtime to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

THE DETAILS
• Both teams came out energized to begin play in the NCAA Tournament
• A Benedictine foul just three minutes into the contest set up a penalty kick
• Carthage, ranked seventh in the nation and second in the region, took advantage to grab the early 1-0 lead
• Benedictine countered just over five minutes later, evening the game
• Erik Stammer dribbled through the defense to score from 10 yards out
• The goal marked the 10th of the season for Stammer
• The defense performed admirably for Benedictine in the opening half as Carthage held an 11-4 advantage in shots
• Each team produced four first half corner kicks
• The second half saw Benedictine create some early offense
• Following a corner kick, Benny Masi missed a header high
• Nick Kapetanos followed by breaking free but having a shot on goal stopped
• Antonio Marti-Polo kept the game tied in the second half with the help of the defense
• Kapetanos had an opportunity late in the half off a free kick but was again denied
• Carthage put together chance after chance late, but could not break the tie
• Marti-Polo made five saves in the second half
• Carthage came up empty after producing back-to-back corners in the first overtime at the halfway point
• The Red Men had three corner opportunities in the first extra session
• Pedro Parra saw a point blank opportunity halfway through the second overtime thwarted
• The chance led to consecutive corner attempts
• A foul in the box set up the game-winner for Schmucker, his second goal of the year
• The win marked the first in program history in NCAA play in the third ever appearance
• Carthage (18-4) had won 11 straight, not dropping a match since September

• Carthage held a commanding 31-10 advantage in shots
• The Red Men boasted a 14-4 margin in the second half and a 3-0 tally in the first overtime
• Both teams finished with seven shots on goal
• Marti-Polo finished with six saves

Benedictine (15-4-2) will face #12 UW-Whitewater for the second time this season in the second round on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. Benedictine scored a 2-1 home win over UW-Whitewater on September 7.
