Benedictine Athletics Mourns the Passing of Anthony 'Tony' LaScala

| By:
Benedictine University (BenU) is mourning the loss of longtime coach, administrator, and Hall of Famer, Anthony 'Tony' LaScala, who passed away this weekend at the age of 91.

LaScala's profound connection to the Institution is unique. He was a part of the Benedictine community through all three of its name changes, from St. Procopius College to Illinois Benedictine College and finally to Benedictine University. His presence through these eras solidifies his role as a cornerstone of our history, and he leaves behind a legacy that will forever be part of Benedictine's story.

LaScala dedicated more than three decades to inspiring students and athletes through his career in education. For 29 years, he served Benedictine with unwavering dedication, not only as men's basketball coach but also as Athletic Director. As a coach, his record of 385 wins made him the winningest coach in the program's history for many years, a testament to his skill, leadership, and profound impact on generations of student-athletes.

His influence extended far beyond the basketball court, shaping the character and lives of those he coached and worked alongside. BenU claimed nine conference titles during his tenure and reached the final eight of the NCAA Division III tournament in the 1991-92 season. LaScala's journey took him to places like Peru and Brazil to share the sport of basketball and he was featured in many awards for his service and success.

Throughout his career, LaScala inspired countless individuals with his commitment, integrity, and passion for developing not only their skills but also their character. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched both on and off the court. Many former players have followed in his footsteps, coaching at the high school and collegiate level.

For those who would like to leave a lasting tribute to his life, memorial donations may be directed to Loaves & Fishes Community Services.

A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 4-8 p.m. at the Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
