GLEN ELLYN, Ill. - Benedictine University's third-seeded volleyball team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday evening, losing to No. 6 seed Edgewood College, 3-1 (26-28, 17-25, 25-12, 14-25), in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) post-season tournament (played at the College of DuPage). BU ends the season at 16-16 overall, while Edgewood improved to 16-16 with the win.
Junior
Kayla Leyden had another strong effort for Benedictine, notching match-leading totals in kills (19), digs (20) and aces (6).
Kaitlin Walsh added six kills, while
Miranda Brannen and
Sarah Porod each had five kills.
Celia Porod had four kills and a team-leading three blocks.
Junior
Jackie Rust, the libero, had 14 digs and two aces to her credit in the loss.
As a team, Benedictine hit just .083 for the match. Conversely, Edgewood had an attack average of .219.
In the very first set, Benedictine jumped out to a 23-17 lead, only to be outscored 7-0 and find itself trailing 24-23 (before eventually losing 28-26). Set two saw Edgewood control matters most of the way and take advantage of a negative attack average (-.086) by the host team.
Benedictine bounced back to dominate the third set. Walsh had four of her kills in that set alone. Leyden also served up four aces in that segment. In the fourth and final set, BU again found negative attack numbers (-.100), while Edgewood made but two attack errors in the closing set.
