Eagles Fall In Season Opener to No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan

BOX SCORE

LISLE, Ill. –The Benedictine University men's basketball team opened up the 2010-11 season against No.4 Illinois Wesleyan University on Monday night at the Dan and Ada Rice Center. The Titans held a 34-33 advantage at half-time and the Eagles could not overcome their deficit, falling to IWU 78-64.

The Eagles (0-1) started off slow in the first half, allowing Illinois Wesleyan (1-0) to take a 22-9 lead halfway through the half. Benedictine found their momentum and with layups from Nate Green and Terry Licht, found themselves within six.

After IWU's Dan Schouten's made free-throw, Dario Jokic nailed two three-pointers and AJ Brown's dunk put the Eagles down by just one with three minutes remaining. The Titan offense would not quit as Duncan Lawson hit a layup but with just one second remaining, Green hit a three-pointer to send the Eagles into the locker room at halftime down by just one point.

Both teams traded baskets to start off the second half and with two free-throw shots from Cameron Snelling the Eagles took their only lead of the game, 41-39. After Matt Schick tied the game at 41 with a layup, the game remained scoreless for the next three minutes until Wesleyan's Travis Rosenkranz ended the scoring drought with a shot from behind the arc, igniting a 7-0 run for IWU.

Jerrell Tribble and Brian Genslinger put the Eagles back to within seven with made layups, but the Titan offense was too much to handle as they out-shot BenU in the second half, 44-31 and took home the 78-64 victory.

Green led the Eagles with 14 points (5-for-8) and five assists while Tribble was next with 13 points and a team high six rebounds. Jokic was the only other Eagle to score in double-digits with 11 points and was 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

Schick led all players with 18 points while Lawson had game high 11 rebounds for the Titans.

The men's basketball team is back in action on Thursday, November 18 when they travel to Cornell College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
