LAKE FOREST, Ill. – After a grueling five set win over North Central College, the Benedictine University volleyball team defeated Lake Forest in four sets to go undefeated at the Red and Black Triangular on Saturday afternoon.

After winning the first two sets over North Central (6-6) 25-18, 25-19, the Eagles (8-4) dropped the next two sets 17-25, 19-25. The fifth set saw both teams battle back and forth and luckily it was the Eagles who came out on top, defeating the Cardinals 16-14.

Benedictine was out-blocked 14-2 but out-hit the Cardinals 55-42. Kayla Leyden led all players with 16 kills while Candice Cuppini tallied 12 kills. Four Eagles had double-digit digs including Leyden with 24, Jackie Rust with 22, Kara Zuro with 18 and Meagan Kmieciak who led the Eagles with 27 digs. Zuro also tallied 30 assists in the Eagles victory.

Benedictine fell 24-26 to Lake Forest in the first set, but came back to win the next three sets 25-18, 25-15 and 25-22. The Eagles out-hit and out-dug the Foresters, tallying 53 kills and 72 digs as a team. Leading the way was Leyden with 18 kills and 10 digs while Rust tallied 21 digs and Kmieciak had 17 digs. Taylor Hoppe had three aces and 16 assists while Miranda Brannen had nine kills and one block assist.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran for a 7:00 p.m. Northern Athletics Conference contest.
