Michelle Gaede tied for a game-high 16 points and seven rebounds with six assists but it wasn't enough as the Dominican University Stars defeated the Benedictine University women's basketball team, 63-51, on Tuesday night in the Dan and Ada Rice Center.
The Eagles (4-10, 1-6 NAC) were hot in the first seven minutes of the game, taking a 13-2 lead with buckets from Gaede and
Tracey Walsh. A layup from DU's (9-5, 5-2 NAC) Sarah Budz sparked a 15-0 run for the Stars to take a 19-13 lead. A three-pointer from Walsh stopped the Eagle's drought but Dominican went on to take a 34-26 half-time lead.
The second half saw BenU shoot 44.0 percent from the floor (11-for-25) and come within three points after a layup from
Kam Haifleigh. The Stars caught fire from behind the arc, making 5-of-9 three-pointers for a 55.6 shooting percentage to go on to win 63-51.
As a team, BenU shot 40.7 percent from the field (22-for-54) and forced 17 DU turnovers on eight steals. Along with Gaede, Haifleigh scored 16 points and tallied seven rebounds while Walsh had 13 points and four rebounds.
Ashley Oliver led DU with 14 points and five assists.
The women's basketball team is back in action on Saturday, January 14 when they travel to Marian University for a 2:00 p.m. Northern Athletics Conference contest.
