In a thrilling five set victory, the Benedictine University volleyball team defeated Edgewood College on Saturday night to win the Northern Athletics Conference championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The first set saw Benedictine (30-4) win 25-23 after
Molly Kovacich tallied five kills and five digs. In the second set, Edgewood (26-9) took an early lead and never looked back, winning 25-18. The momentum stayed in EC's favor heading in to the third set as they got off to a 10-point lead and went on to win 25-17. Benedictine tallied 15 kills in the next set to force a fifth set after winning 25-22. In the fifth set, the Eagles took an early lead but saw Edgewood battle back to come within two but a kill from
Kaitlin Walsh sealed the Eagles fate as they won 15-12.
Candice Cuppini led the Eagles with 20 kills while
Molly Kovacich tallied 14 kills and 23 digs. Abby Sattler had 49 assists and 15 digs while
Kara Zuro led all players with 28 digs.
Haley Fitzgerald recorded 10 digs while
Meagan Kmieciak had 12 digs.
