ELMHURST, Ill. - The Benedictine University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to University of Chicago in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Regional to end their season.
Benedictine (30-5) advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Northern Athletics Conference title last weekend, defeating Edgewood College in five sets. In the Dan and Ada Rice Center Eagle Room, the volleyball team watched the NCAA Selection Show as they were placed as the No. 5 seed in the Elmhurst College Regional.
The Eagles caught fire in the first set, taking a three-point lead with kills from
Candice Cuppini and
Mailani Burton.
Nicole Adams ended the match with a kill for the 25-19 win.
It was Chicago who got off to the quick start in set two, but BenU quickly tied the match at 10 after an ace from
Kara Zuro. Both teams battled back and forth the rest of the set but it was UC to take home the 25-23 win.
Tied at one set a piece, Benedictine could not find their rhythm in the third set. Chicago took a huge 19-10 lead and never looked back, cruising to a 25-17 win.
Chicago started off 4-0 in the fourth set but the Eagles battled back to come within two with kills from
Nicole Adams and
Kaitlin Walsh. Three straight kills from UC's Katie Huntington stopped the BenU momentum and Chicago went on to win 25-18.
Adams led the Eagles with 13 kills and just one error while Kovacich recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Walsh tallied seven kills and defensively, Zuro led with 22 digs.
Meagan Kmieciak recorded 10 digs and one ace for the Eagles.
Benedictine ends the 2012 season with a 30-5 record.
