DECATUR, Ill. - The Benedictine University volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday night at the Millikin University Linda Slagell Classic. After defeating Eureka in straight sets, the Eagles dropped a five-set thriller to host Millikin.
As a team, Benedictine (13-1) tallied 35 kills and 38 digs to defeat Eureka in three sets (25-9, 25-8, 25-13).
Mailani Burton and
Nicole Adams each had five kills while
Kara Zuro had seven digs and two aces.
The Eagles took the first set against Millikin, 25-23 before falling 28-26 in the second set. The teams split the next two sets and Benedictine fought hard the entire match but could not pull out the victory, dropping a close 15-12 final set.
Candice Cuppini led all players with 18 kills while
Kaitlin Walsh had 11 and
Molly Kovacich with 12 kills. Abby Sattler recorded 53 assists and two aces. Defensively, Kovacich tallied 23 digs while
Haley Fitzgerald had 19 digs.
Benedictine continues day two of the Classic on Saturday morning when they take on Wisconsin Lutheran College at 11:00 a.m. then a 1:00 p.m. contest against Concordia University-Wisconsin.
