RIVER FOREST, Ill. - A pair of goals from
Jonny Lehman lifted the regionally ranked Benedictine University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday.
"It was a good start to a tough stretch of three games in five days," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "Playing at a local rival on a weekday afternoon can sometimes be a letdown game but I thought we handled it relatively well. Our play in the final third was lacking sharpness and we had stretches where we let Concordia back in the match, but overall we managed the game, moved the ball well, and created quite a few quality scoring opportunities. We will certainly take three points and a shutout on the road in conference."
Lehman's first strike came in the 15th minute. The goal came less than a minute after an attempt from
Julio Lopez was stopped by one of the top keepers in the conference this season. Benedictine limited Concordia Chicago to just three shots in the first half while stringing together consistent chances.
"Our guys were pretty unhappy with their showing today and the coaching staff definitely wanted to see a higher level of play and killer instinct," Nassif added. "A successful team is capable of earning results even when the performance is lacking, and that was the case today. I think it is even more promising that we continue to have different guys step up and carry us, and today that was
Jonny Lehman with a brace."
Opportunities came for both sides in the second half, but Benedictine was able extend the lead in the 69th minute when Lehman scored again.
Benedictine held a 17-13 edge in shots with
Anes Kadiric totaling six.
Zorohn Reed stopped five shots in goal for the shutout.
"To go undefeated on the road in conference this season is certainly impressive," Nassif said. "Credit our guys for their consistency and resolve especially when we were able to beat arguably the three best teams all on the road. So to earn 13 points through five road conference matches was huge. Now we need to hold down the fort with three remaining home conference matches and see how we stack up against the two CCIW opponents left on our non-conference portion of the schedule."
The Eagles (7-5-1, 6-0-1) face the top ranked team in the region on Thursday night in a makeup game at 7:00 p.m. when nationally ranked Wheaton visits.
