Despite tallying 34 kills, the Benedictine University volleyball team fell to Edgewood College in three sets on Friday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
Before the game, six Benedictine seniors were honored including
Nicole Adams,
Brooke Bowman,
Candice Cuppini,
Haley Fitzgerald,
Jacki Kaluzny and
Molly Kovacich.
The loss was BenU's (14-11, 7-1 NACC) first loss in conference play while Edgewood (21-6) moved to 8-0 in the NACC.
Both teams got off to a slow start but it was Edgewood who picked up the momentum, tallying 14 kills in the first set to win 25-18. The second set was a back-and-forth battle in the beginning but again, EC pulled away for the 25-18 victory. Benedictine trailed throughout most of the third set with Edgewood taking an 18-10 lead. A service ace from
Haley Fitzgerald sparked the BenU offense as they went on a 9-5 run including four straight points that included kills from
Brooke Bowman and Abby Sattler. The Edgewood offense was too much as they went on to take the set 25-19.
Benedictine was led by
Candice Cuppini and
Molly Kovacich who each tallied nine kills while Kovacich also tallied 15 digs. Bowman recorded five kills with two block assists while Abby Sattler had 10 digs and 30 assists. Fitzgerald led BenU with 17 digs.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, October 23 when they travel to Dominican University for a 7:00 pm contest.
