MEQUON, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team overcame a 2-0 hole on the road to remain unbeaten in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play with a 3-2 win at Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday.
"I can't say how proud I am of the squad today," said head coach
Rich Nassif. "You never want to get off the bus and be down 2-0 early in the contest, but we allowed the guys to figure it out, played a bit more positive and tied it up before we knew it against a strong team. It's great to see our guys have the personality and resolve to fight back."
Concordia Wisconsin needed less than 30 seconds to open a 1-0 lead, punching home the rebound on an early penalty kick. The hosts made it 2-0 in the 17th minute.
Anes Kadiric put Benedictine on the board with a response in the 21st minute. Kadiric scored off a block of a cross inside the box from nine yards out. Less than three minutes later the game was even as the Eagles took advantage of a penalty kick and
Edgar Reyes struck to even the score.
"The promising sign is that we keep having to match work rate and intensity but are not sacrificing our quality of play and combination," Nassif added. "The second half wasn't pretty at times, but the game winner was a thing of beauty. The guys continue to find more chemistry and rhythm and it is definetly showing."
With the contest even at the break, Benedictine grabbed the lead for the first time in the 70th minute. Reyes found the back of the net again with what turned out to be the game winner on the first shot of the half.
Zorohn Reed preserved the win with a save of a header in the final five minutes. Reed recorded five saves in net.
Concordia Wisconsin held a dominant 20-4 edge in shots with 13 coming in the second half attempting to grab the lead.
"We're halfway through NACC playing having faced four of the six tournament qualifiers from last season," said Nassif. "This is a tremendous start for this team, but it's not about how you start."
Benedictine (5-4-1, 4-0-1) is unbeaten in the last five matches and has won four in a row. The Eagles will attempt to continue the streak against North Park University on Wednesday night. North Park has been nationally ranked this season.
