The Benedictine University volleyball team dropped two matches in the first day of the Eagle Classic, falling 3-1 to Elmhurst College and 3-0 to DePauw University.
The Eagles (15-14) fell 25-18 in the first set to Elmhurst before tallying 16 kills for a 25-23 second set victory. The Elmhurst offense proved to be too much for BenU as they dropped the next two sets 25-23, 25-18.
Molly Kovacich led the Eagles with 12 kills and also had seven digs while
Nicole Adams hit .308 with 11 kills and three block assists.
Brooke Bowman had nine kills while
Kara Epping recorded six kills. Defensively,
Haley Fitzgerald led BenU with 19 digs while
Andraia Leja tallied 12.
Breanna Hamerlinck picked up 15 digs and one ace.
In the second match, the Eagles put up a tough fight against DePauw (23-4). The Eagles tallied 13 kills in the first match but fell 25-19. After a 25-16 second set, BenU rallied in the third set with another 13 kills but DU's defense was too much to handle as the Tigers won the set 25-21.
Kovacich led BenU with 11 kills and had 14 digs. Fitzgerald had a season high 32 digs while Adams and Bowman had nine and seven kills, respectively. Abby Sattler had 33 assists and one ace in the match.
Benedictine continues play in the Eagle Classic on Saturday morning when they host Lawrence University at 12:00 p.m. and then face Carthage College at 4:00 p.m.
