Women's Basketball Beaten by Monmouth

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team was beaten by Monmouth College 74-57 on Tuesday evening.

Monmouth scored the first four points of the contest and led until Briana Hamilton finished a three-point play with 14:47 left in the opening half, putting Benedictine up 9-8. The contest was back and forth until Monmouth grabbed the lead for good with 11:16 to play in the first. With the game tied at 13, the visitors embarked on a 7-0 run to jump ahead by seven. Benedictine trimmed the deficit to just three points on a pair of free throws from Kam Haifleigh but Monmouth embarked on a 14-1 run to take control.

Monmouth (3-0) led 38-22 at the break as Benedictine hit on just 27.3 percent of shots in the first (6-22). The opening half featured five ties and two lead changes. Monmouth turned 12 Benedictine turnovers into 19 points.

The second half saw Benedictine make pushes, but Monmouth maintained control and streaked away to the victory. Michelle Batty hit a three following two threes from Michelle Gaede to pull the Eagles within 43-34 with 13:46 left. The trey was part of a 9-2 run. The visitors quickly answered with five straight points and found themselves up by 17 with 8:35 left. The visitors led by as many as 27 in the second half.

Benedictine finished the game shooting 32.1 percent. The Eagles connected on seven three pointers. Batty was the lone player to reach double figures, finishing with 10. Gaede and Hamilton added nine off the bench with Hamilton snaring seven rebounds.

Benedictine (0-2) finishes a busy first week of the season by opening conference play on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against Alverno.
