Eagle Watch: Tuesday’s Tournament Games Headline Big Week

Only three Benedictine University fall sports teams are in action this week, but the Men's Soccer and Volleyball teams are set to begin play in the Northern Athletics Conference Collegiate Tournament. Both teams will play at home on Tuesday, making for an exciting night of Benedictine Athletics. Here's a look at all of the matchups this week:

MEN'S SOCCER (9-8-1, 8-1-1)

Tuesday: vs. #6 Edgewood (10-6-3, 5-4-1) in NACC Tournament Semifinals, 7:00 p.m.

Men's Soccer will play its first conference tournament game in the Rich Nassif era on Tuesday night when the Eagles of Edgewood College visits the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex. Edgewood is the tournament's sixth seed and draws the matchup with BenU after defeating third-seeded Aurora on penalty kicks on Saturday. It was a shootout that went very deep; as Edgewood prevailed 8-7 after a 1-1 tie through two overtimes.

Benedictine won the battle of the Eagles earlier this season, defeating Edgewood 2-1 in two overtimes on September 28 in Lisle. Edgewood struck first in that match-up, with Andrew Aurit scoring in the game's fourth minute. However, Julio Lopez found Ante Markotic twice, once in the 82nd minute and again in the second overtime, to give BenU the victory. The goals were Markotic's third and fourth on the season, and the junior currently leads the team with eight.

All-time, Benedictine is 0-3 in the conference tournament, while Edgewood is 4-4-2. The winner of Tuesday's matchup advances to the NACC Tournament Championship on Saturday against the winner of the Dominican/Concordia-Wisconsin matchup. If BenU wins, Saturday's game will be in Lisle.

VOLLEYBALL (16-15, 9-2)

Tuesday: vs. #6 Aurora (12-17, 5-6) in NACC Tournament Quarterfinals, 7:00 p.m.

While Men's Soccer is in action on the turf, Volleyball will take on Aurora inside the Dan and Ada Rice Center. Aurora, the tournament's six seed, sat at 3-6 in the conference just two weeks ago. However, the Spartans defeated Concordia-Chicago at home and NACC Tournament bound Concordia-Wisconsin on the road to climb all the way to the sixth seed in the eight-team tournament.

Tuesday's game adds another chapter to an already storied rivalry, as it's the first time the two schools will face off in the NACC Tournament for Volleyball. Benedictine is 10-5 against Aurora dating back to 2002, but just 4-4 since the conference was founded in 2006. The last time the two teams faced each other in post-season action was 2005, when Aurora defeated Benedictine in the now defunct Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Championship game. When the Eagles and Spartans met on October 15 this season in Aurora, BenU came out on top 3-1. Seniors Candice Cuppini (18), Molly Kovacich (12), and Nicole Adams (11) all recorded over 10 kills.

The winner of Tuesday's matchup will advance to the NACC Tournament Semifinals against the winner of the Dominican/Wisconsin Lutheran match. Game time for Thursday's game will be 7:00 p.m.

FOOTBALL (6-2, 4-1)

Saturday: at Maranatha (1-7), 12:00 p.m.

Football takes a break from NACC action this weekend, as the team will travel to Watertown, Wisconsin to take on Maranatha Baptist Bible College. It will be BenU's final non-conference tilt of the season, as the team is 2-1 in such games on the 2013 campaign.

Maranatha, a former member of the NACC, plays every NACC school this season as an independent. Thus far, the Crusaders have struggled in those contests, going 0-5 while being outscored 299-88. Despite the struggles, sophomore quarterback Brandon McCormick has managed to throw for 14 touchdowns and is averaging over 216 yards per game through the air. Also, freshman wide receiver Clayton Morrison has a kick return for a touchdown and has totaled more than 500 all-purpose yards on the year.

The Crusaders have never defeated BenU, as BenU holds a 5-0 advantage over the Wisconsin school. Last season, Benedictine downed the Crusaders 34-6 behind 220 rushing yards and two touchdowns from John Borsellino.
