Eagle Watch: Volleyball has Busy Week

Six out of nine Fall sports teams are in action for BenU Athletics this week, with Volleyball being the busiest team with five games. Here is a look at all the action ahead:

FOOTBALL (1-1)

Saturday: at Kalamazoo College (2-0), 12:00 p.m.

Coming off of a victory over North Park, Benedictine football takes the field again on Saturday. Coach Cooper's team will take on Kalamazoo College at 12:00 p.m. central time on the road.

Kalamazoo competes in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, and Saturday's game is a part of the yearly MIAA/NACC challenge. In last year's challenge game, Benedictine came from 21 points down and shutout Albion in the second half to win 32-28. The Eagles and Hornets met back in 2010 and 2011, with the Hornets prevailing in both contests.

The Hornets have been impressive thus far, scoring 59 total points and averaging 413 yards of offense per game in two victories. BenU's secondary will have a tough test in senior wide receiver Josh Wise, as he's already caught 21 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles secondary intercepted four North Park passes last week, so the matchup between Wise and the team's safeties and cornerbacks is certainly an intriguing one to watch.

VOLLEYBALL (4-4, 1-0)

Wednesday: vs. Wisconsin Lutheran (3-9, 1-0), 7:00 p.m.

Volleyball begins a busy week on Wednesday when they take on the Warriors of Wisconsin Lutheran at the Dan and Ada Rice Center. It will be the second Northern Athletics Conference matchup for both teams this season.

Wisconsin Lutheran comes into the matchup riding a five-game losing streak. However, the team's last victory was an important one, as they defeated conference foe MSOE 3-1 on Tuesday night. Senior Erin Greenfield, an all-conference first teamer a season ago, is off to a strong start with 145 kills.

Since 2006, the Eagles are a perfect 10-0 against Wisconsin Lutheran. Two of those victories have come in the conference tournament (2010, 2012) and just one matchup has gone five set (2012 regular season).

Friday and Saturday: at Gargoyle Classic

Over the weekend, Volleyball will face some of the toughest competition on the schedule at the University of Chicago Gargoyle Classic. The team will take on Millikin, Christopher Newport, Elmhurst, and Chicago, teams who were a combined 122-32 last season.

Millikin will be BenU's first opponent of the weekend at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. After finishing 25-10 last year, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin School is 6-6 to start the season. Like BenU, they played in the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont, California to begin the season, going 2-2 out west. The only common opponent for the two teams in the tournament was Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, who defeated both BenU and Millikin 3-0. The Big Blue and the Eagles faced off once last season, with the Big Blue prevailing in five sets.

Also on Friday night, the Eagles will face Christopher Newport at 6:00 p.m. The Captains were an astounding 40-3 last season, advancing all the way to the NCAA Division III Semifinals and finishing the season ranked third in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III poll. This season, the Virginia school is off to a 7-5 start and was ranked 12th in the latest AVCA poll. One of those five losses was to NACC school Edgewood, whom the Eagles defeated in the conference championship last season.

The Eagles will start Saturday's action by taking on another NCAA Division III Semifinalist from a year ago: Elmhurst. The Bluejays finished the season ranked fourth in the AVCA Division III poll, and after a 9-1 start to 2013, they sit in that fourth spot once again. It will be the first of two meetings between the schools this season, as the Bluejays and Eagles will also compete on November 1 in BenU's Eagle Classic. Benedictine and Elmhurst last faced off in 2011, with Elmhurst winning in four sets.

BenU will wrap up the tournament by facing host Chicago, who eliminated BenU from the NCAA Division III Tournament last season with a 3-1 victory in the first round. It was the last of three meeting between the Eagles and the Maroons, as the teams split a pair of regular season games. After finishing 29-11 last year, Chicago is ranked 13th in the latest AVCA Division III poll and is 7-3 to start the season, which includes a victory over NACC school Dominican.

MEN'S SOCCER (1-4)

Wednesday: vs. Wheaton (4-2), 7 p.m.

Men's soccer faces one of its toughest tests of the season on Wednesday night at the Lisle-Benedictine Sports Complex. The Eagles will take on Wheaton, who finished 18-4-3 last season.

A CCIW school, Wheaton was one of the last eight teams standing in 2012, advancing all the way to the sectional finals of the NCAA Division III tournament. This season, the Thunder are off to a 4-2 start and are ranked 19th in the latest d3soccer.com poll. Wheaton will be the fourth out of six CCIW teams the Eagles will face this season, but the two schools haven't met since 2005. Wheaton defeated BenU 3-0 in Lisle in that matchup.

Saturday: at Wisconsin Lutheran (2-2-2)

On Saturday, men's soccer opens up NACC play. The Eagles will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to face Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Warriors are 2-2-2 on the season and are coming off of a 5-0 win over Martin Luther. Last season, the Milwaukee school made the conference tournament as the sixth and final seed, going 6-5 in conference play and 11-9 overall. Benedictine fell at the hands of the Warriors 1-0, but was victorious in the previous three meetings.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (2-4)

Tuesday: at Elmhurst (4-2), 7:00 p.m.

Like men's soccer, the women's soccer team will also take on a CCIW school to start the week. BenU will travel to nearby Elmhurst to face the Bluejays.

Elmhurst is 4-2 to start the season and defeated NACC school Dominican 2-0 to open the season back on August 30. The team was picked to place fifth in the CCIW pre-season poll after going 8-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play in 2012. The two schools last met in 2004, with Elmhurst prevailing 9-0.

Saturday: at Wisconsin Lutheran (2-5), 3:30 p.m.

After men's soccer finishes taking on Wisconsin Lutheran, the women's soccer team will face-off against the Warriors. It will be BenU's second conference matchup of the season, as the team fell to Aurora last week.

Wisconsin Lutheran is currently on a five game losing streak. The team defeated Beloit and Eureka to open the season, but has fallen in each game since. Last season, the Warriors finished in eighth place in the conference, going 8-8-3 overall and 5-6-1 against conference opponents. One of those three draws was against the Eagles, as the two teams tied 1-1 last October. It was the only loss or tie the Eagles have had against Wisconsin Lutheran since 2006, as the Eagles are 6-0-1 in that span.

TENNIS (3-4)

Thursday: at St. Francis (0-1), 4:00 p.m.

Tennis will open the week on Thursday against a non-conference opponent. BenU takes on the University of St. Francis, an NAIA school located in Joliet, Illinois.

St. Francis will be Benedictine's first  non-conference opponent, as all seven games thus far have been against NACC foes. The Fighting Saints have just played one match on the season, falling to Bethel College on September 5. The two teams were scheduled to meet last season, but the game was cancelled.

Saturday: vs. Edgewood (7-3) and Rockford (0-6), 10:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.

On Saturday, Tennis returns to NACC action with two conference games. The Eagles will take on Edgewood in the morning and Rockford in the afternoon.

Edgewood is off to a fast start this season, sitting at 7-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play. In those six conference wins, Edgewood has won four matchups 9-0 and two matchups 8-1. Edgewood has historically been a force in conference tennis, as the team hasn't lost more than one conference game in any season since it was founded in 2006. Edgewood defeated BenU 9-0 last season.

Rockford has played only NACC matchups this season, falling to Aurora, Lakeland, Marian, Dominican MSOE, and Concordia-Wisconsin. Last season, the Eagles defeated the Regents 8-1. BenU has not lost to Rockford since 2006.

WOMEN'S GOLF

Tuesday: at Elmhurst College Fall Invite, 11:00 a.m.

On Tuesday, women's golf will began the week by competing in the Elmhurst College Fall Invite. The event will take place at the Oak Brook Golf Club in Oak Brook, Illinois.

This past weekend, the Eagles competed in the Benedictine University Invite at St. Andrew's in West Chicago. While the event was shortened to 18 holes due to weather, Kathryn Ghanayem shot her best round of the season with a 91 (+19). The team finished in 11th place.

Friday and Saturday: at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite

Women's golf will also compete in Wisconsin this week, as the team will participate in the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite on Friday and Saturday. The event will take place at Delbrook Golf Course in Delavan, Wisconsin.

The team also competed in the UW-Whitewater Invite last Fall, finishing in tenth place. Bailey Weber shot a 98 and finished tied for 34th, while Ghanayem shot a 104 and placed 49th.
