RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team stunned perennial conference power Dominican University with a 1-0 victory on the road Wednesday.
"This is a huge win for our program," head coach
Rich Nassif stated. "The victory is a testament to the hard work that has been put forward over the last two years. The players left it all on the field today."
Dominican, the preseason conference favorite, held the sixth slot in the nation earlier this season and had never lost a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match since the conference opened play in 2006. The Stars have won every conference championship and owned a combined 85-0-3 mark in the regular season and conference tournament. Dominican had gone through 104 total conference matches without a loss predating the NACC back to October of 2004. Dominican outscored conference opponents 61-2 last season and has won 11 consecutive conference titles, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year.
"To be the team that ended the streak and to be able to do it on the road is a truly historic moment," Nassif added. "There is still a lot of time left in the season and we have bigger and better goals in store for this program, but with a pair of shutouts in conference play the players are starting to buy into what we are trying to do."
Edgar Reyes scored the lone goal in the contest, banging a shot home off the post from 15 yards out in the 26th minute.
Anes Kadiric set up the goal. Kadiric picked up the ball at midfield and played it through to Reyes, who was able to sprint past the back line and guide the ball into the net. The shot was the only attempt to reach the Dominican net in the match. The host Stars held a 14-8 advantage in total shots throughout the contest but possession was nearly equal.
Ante Markotic recorded three shots for Benedictine with Kadiric and Reyes collecting two apiece.
Zorohn Reed stood on his head in goal, making six saves in net to record the shutout. Reed made a diving stop on the last Dominican shot in the 84th minute. The Eagles have not allowed a goal in two conference matches. Reed owns two full shutouts this season and was part of a third in the season opener.
The back line constantly made offensive surges difficult, challenging every pass. Dominican attempted 15 corner kicks in the contest including nine in the second half. The Stars attempted five corners in the final 15 minutes and three in the final 10 minutes, but Benedictine thwarted every attempt.
"We defended like warriors today," Nassif said. "We had to move guys around due to injury and Dominican kept directing everything towards the box late, but we were able to stay organized."
Benedictine (2-4-1, 1-0-1) beefed up the non-conference schedule this season to better prepare for competition like Dominican. The Eagles are back at home on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. to face Edgewood College.
