SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team improved to 7-1 in NACC play by rolling past Lakeland 9-3 on the road Saturday afternoon.
Benedictine peppered Lakeland early, but did not score until the 14th minute.
Ante Markotic opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the year. Lakeland evened the game in the 17th minute and took a 2-1 lead with a tally in the 18th minute. Benedictine was able to knot the score in the 29th minute on the 10th goal of the year from
Nick Kapetanos. Kapetanos found the back of the net again late in the half to put Benedictine ahead for good.
"Today was an all around sloppy performance from us," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "We knew we would have quite an attack but got too comfortable once we were up 1-0. Give credit to the guys coming off the bench who stepped up and gave us that needed edge."
Benedictine held a 25-8 advantage in shots. Kapetanos scored five times in the game, adding three in the second half to put the match out of reach. Markotic also added a second half tally and recorded 10 shots, with eight on goal.
Steve Mack played the whole game in goal and recorded three saves.
"As I have said all year, we know that we have two strikers who can really play at a high level," Nassif added. "Getting seven goals from them today was pretty special and for Nick (Kapetanos) to get five, what a freshman campaign it has been for him. We will have a chance to regroup this week and get some guys back. It's time to start hitting our stride on all parts of the field as it becomes do or die time."
Benedictine (8-6-1, 7-1) hosts Lake Forest in a non-conference affair on Thursday.
