FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team received a late goal to sneak out a 1-0 road win at Marian on Saturday.
Alexis Gutierrez tallied the only goal of the contest in the 88th minute. Gutierrez slipped home a shot into the left corner following two quick touch passes from
Nick Kapetanos and
Bobby Kostadinov. The goal came on the 21st shot of the day and was the first in the career of Gutierrez. Benedictine notched 13 shots in the second half.
"We knew Marian would give an inspired effort on their Senior Day," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "I was not happy with our lack of urgency from the opening whistle. We did create quite a few quality chances throughout the game but either hit the woodwork or hit it right at their keeper."
Benedictine played tight on defense, limiting Marian to just five shots.
Steve Mack needed to make just one save in net. Kapetanos posted five shots in the match.
"It would be easy to say today was a disappointing performance, but great teams get contribution from everyone," Nassif added. "A couple subs really changed the game for us in the second half including Bobby and Alexis, whose first career goal sealed the win for us."
Benedictine (10-6-1, 8-1) closes the regular season on Wednesday afternoon at Aurora.
