LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 victory over Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday night to log a fifth straight victory.
Benedictine was able to win the defensive battle, overcoming shifts in momentum. Concordia Wisconsin put together three shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Benedictine finally put together an attack in the 27th minute, hitting a crossbar. The lone goal of the contest scored in the 33rd minute when
Ante Markotic punched in a cross from
Nick Kapetanos. Benedictine held a 5-4 edge in shots during the opening 45 minutes.
Concordia Wisconsin was able to string together six second half shots, but the Benedictine defense kept rising to the challenge.
Steve Mack logged back-to-back saves on attempts in the 53rd and 56 minute. Mack came up big again late, recording a save in the 87th minute to preserve the shutout. Mack stopped six shots in the contest.
"I think everyone on the field was a little disappointed with the second half performance," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "We didn't really play the kind of game we wanted with the lead. I felt like we just gave up too much territory on the field. Whenever you get a shutout in conference you can't really complain too much though."
The visitors held a 10-7 advantage in shots.
Santiago Beltran produced three for Benedictine with two on target. Markotic notched a pair. Kapetanos was stopped late on an opportunity to extend the lead.
