Coming off of a victory over fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University, the Benedictine University men's basketball team will face another tough opponent on Saturday. The Eagles will travel to Milwaukee School of Engineering for the first Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game of the season. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m.
The victory over Illinois Wesleyan was a total team win, as eight different Eagles scored at least four points en route to a 61-60 win. Benedictine held the Titans, one of the best offensive teams in the country last season (82.1 points per game) to just 39% from the field and 25% on three-point attempts.
Tahron Harvey led BenU scorers with 13 points, while
Mack Brown and
Michael Blaszczyk each added 10.
John Dodson contributed four points and seven rebounds while defending pre-season All-American Dylan Overstreet for most of the night.
Milwaukee School of Engineering figures to be one of the best teams the NACC has to offer in 2014-2015. After finishing a combined 38-14 with a 27-9 NACC record over the past two seasons, the Raiders were selected to finish second in the preseason conference poll and received eight first-place votes. The team possesses reigning NACC Player of the Year and DIII News Preseason All-American Austin Stueck, who has averaged 18 points, five rebounds, and three assists in MSOE's two games this season. MSOE is 1-1 thus far, defeating Illinois Tech 92-41 on Saturday and falling to Ohio Northern 70-58 on Sunday.
The Eagles in Raiders played in two of the NACC's most entertaining games last season. In Lisle on December 21, BenU cut a 17-point lead with 13 minutes left all the way down to two with two minutes remaining only to see the Raiders held on for a 59-56 victory. At MSOE on February 8, Benedictine led by 12 at halftime, but MSOE erased the deficit and won 80-74 in overtime.
Harvey contributed 16 points and 10 rebounds in the December matchup, while
Tim McGinty averaged 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games. BenU's last wins in the series came in the 2011-12 season, as the Eagles defeated the Raiders both in Lisle and Milwaukee.
