AURORA, Ill. - Trailing by 13 points early in the second half, the Benedictine University women's basketball team did not allow a field goal and rallied to a 56-48 win over Aurora on Wednesday night.
Aurora led for a bulk of the first half. The host Spartans opened an eight-point advantage less than five minutes into the contest. Benedictine battled back to even the game at 15-15 with 7:24 to go on a jumper from
Nicole Botich, who put forth a career effort in the contest. The Eagles led for the first time on a free throw from Alana Ferry moments later. Botich extended the lead to 22-17 with a jumper at the 4:42 mark. Aurora closed the half on a 12-5 run to lead 29-27 at the half.
The hosts opened the second half on a 12-1 run to nab a 41-28 lead. Benedictine clamped down on defense and did not allow another field goal after the 15:18 mark. Botich opened a 13-0 run to tie the game with a layup. The run lasted almost nine minutes.
Meghan Novak tied the score at 43-43 with a three-pointer at the 6:49 mark. With the contest even for the ninth time following a back and forth stretch, Benedictine ripped off six straight to commence a 9-1 run to close the contest.
Botich, who put Benedictine ahead for good with a jumper with 2:51 remaining, was the lone player to score in double figures, notching her second double-double of the year by scoring a career best 24 to go with 12 rebounds. Botich hit nine shots in the game. Novak added nine points and
DeKayla Crayton netted eight. Benedictine led for just under seven minutes in the game.
Benedictine (2-5, 2-0 NACC) travels to Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.
