Men's Hoops Upended in OT

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team saw a three-game win streak come to a close with an 80-74 overtime defeat at MSOE on Saturday.

Benedictine controlled much of the first half, trailing just once at 12-11 just over six minutes into the game. Tim McGinty put Benedictine back in front moments later with a three. The Eagles used a 7-0 run to move ahead by nine points at 23-14 with 12:02 to go in the opening half. MSOE chopped the deficit down to five with less than nine minutes left, but an 8-0 burst stretched the advantage to 13 points at 35-22 with a pair of free throws from McGinty.

The lead reached 14 early in the second half but MSOE used a huge run to take the lead. Benedictine was held off the board for nearly six minutes as the hosts used a 17-0 run to open a 51-47 lead with 8:21 left. Down by five with just over a minute left, Benedictine rallied to tie the game and force overtime. Michael Woolf knocked down two free throws with :44 to play to send the game into extra time.

Benedictine never led in the extra session, scoring all but three points from the free throw line. The lone field goal was a three from Michael Blaszczyk that dwindled the lead to 74-70. MSOE led by seven in the frame and connected on three field goals.

Woolf and McGinty tallied 19 points each to lead Benedictine. Kane Steger scored 14 points off the bench with Blaszczyk adding 10. The Eagles held a huge 40-22 edge on the glass and finished the game near perfect from the stripe at 88.5 percent.

Benedictine (10-11, 8-8) travels to Dominican on Tuesday night.
