LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team opened defense of last year's NACC title with a 3-1 decision over Wisconsin Lutheran.
Nick Kapetanos opened the scoring in the 17th minute for Benedictine. Kapetanos embarked on a long run and slipped a shot off the keeper and into the goal near the end line. Kapetanos had another chance moments later, but was denied. Wisconsin Lutheran tightened on defense and went into the half down 1-0.
Benedictine was called for a foul in the box early in the second half, setting up a penalty kick. Wisconsin Lutheran converted to even the game in the 49th minute. Kapetanos was in on the go-ahead goal, assisting along with
Edgar Reyes on a strike from
Ante Markotic. Markotic converted on a sliding strike off a header from a cross in the box. Benedictine finished the scoring when Markotic poked home a third attempt following consecutive saves.
"I was very pleased with the contributions we received today down a few regulars in the back line," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "Everyone who came on the field today gave us a winning effort."
The Eagles held a 17-15 edge in shots.
Steve Mack made seven saves in goal. Markotic posted eight shots with five on goal.
Jonny Lehman and Kaptanos collected three apiece.
"I think we let them back in the game with some small mistakes but it was great to see our front runners get on the board," Nassif added. "The front line combo really came together and played productive soccer. I think our attack is better than last year and it is great to get three goals. I can't wait for an exciting atmosphere in a big time match with Dominican on Tuesday."
Benedictine (2-5-1) hosts Dominican on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The two schools tied for the NACC Championship last year.
