MADISON, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team improved to 3-0 in conference play with a road shutout of Edgewood.
Edgewood, who ousted Benedictine in the NACC Tournament last season, put together early opportunities. Benedictine became aggressive on the attack midway through the first half, generating chance followed by chance, feeding off the defense, who did not allow a shot after the 19th minute.
Francisco Delgado was able to break through in the 37th minute for Benedictine. Delgado headed home a cross from Eric Lukitsch for the first goal of his college career. Benedictine held a 10-4 edge in first half shots with seven coming in the 32nd minute or later.
Momentum carried over into the second half, but Edgewood played stout defense, holding firm until the 85th minute as Benedictine protected the advantage.
Santiago Beltran extended the lead to 2-0 with his first collegiate goal. After two more late chances,
Bobby Kostadinov buried a feed from
Edgar Reyes in the 89th minute to finish off the win. Kostadinov took a lead pass from the middle and struck from a tough angle.
"It's always great to earn a victory on the road," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "I didn't think we played as sharp as we could have in front of the net. It certainly would have been nice to score the second goal sooner as well, but we will take the shutout victory and move on."
Benedictine dialed up 21 shots in the victory. Reyes tallied eight including four on goal.
Ante Markotic added three.
Steve Mack stopped four shots in goal to earn the shutout, his second of the year.
"We created quite a few quality chances and that is something we can build upon," Nassif added. "I always say that great teams receive contributions from a wide array of players, and we certainly did that tonight with Cisco (Delgado) and Santi (Beltran) recording their first career goals."
Benedictine (4-5-1, 3-0) has won three straight and travels to Rockford on Wednesday.
