Women's Hoops Pulls Past Marian

FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team won for a ninth time in 10 contests, pulling away late on the road to sweep the season series from Marian.

Benedictine led for the entire opening 20 minutes of play and did not trail in the contest. Meghan Novak and Vincenza Ranallo hit jumpers on the first two offensive possessions of the contest to put the Eagles ahead 4-0. Holding a 7-5 lead with 17:42 left in the first, Ranallo nailed a three-pointer to open a 7-0 run. Novak finished the stretch with two free throws, handing Benedictine a 14-5 lead.

The hosts pulled within a single point on three occasions in the half, finishing a three-point play with 5:32 remaining to battle within 23-22. The Eagles quickly scored five straight points to move ahead 28-22. Marian responded with six in a row, tying the score. A layup from Jasma Williams with just over a minute remaining allowed Benedictine to take a 30-28 lead into the half.

Novak opened the second half with a three and Briana Hamilton followed with a jumper to extend the lead to 37-30. Benedictine continued to lead, taking a 10-point edge at 48-38 on a basket from DeKayla Crayton with 8:35 left. Marian pulled within four points on two occasions, but Benedictine was able to put the game away. Leading 54-50 with 3:32 remaining, the Eagles allowed just one more point, scoring the final seven points of the game to account for the final tally.

Three players scored in double figures for Benedictine, who finished the contest shooting 51.2 percent from the floor. Novak led the way with 18, finishing a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Ranallo added 13 while Nicole Botich contributed another double-double. Botich scored 11 and added 11 boards. Benedictine held a 36-24 edge on the glass.

Benedictine (9-6, 9-1 NACC) hosts Aurora on Tuesday night.
