Football Season Ends at Lakeland

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Benedictine University football season came to a close with a 46-22 loss at Lakeland College in a de facto conference championship game.

Benedictine was playing from behind from the outset of the contest. Lakeland moved deep into Benedictine territory on the opening drive of the game before turning the ball over on downs. Benedictine held the ball for just one play before a second-down pass from Ryan Sample was intercepted. The hosts needed just four plays to take a 7-0 lead on a short field with 9:14 to play in the opening quarter.

Benedictine quickly responded, rushing down the field with an 11-play drive. Eight of the plays on the drive were running plays and Sample ran in from one yard to even the score with 4:21 left in the first quarter. Lakeland immediately jumped ahead following a nine-play drive, taking a 14-7 edge with just over 30 seconds remaining in the first. The second quarter saw the teams trade punts before another interception set up a touchdown for Lakeland in the final minute, opening a 20-7 lead at the half.

Lakeland scored on the first drive of the third to move ahead 27-7 and added a touchdown in the final minute of the quarter to lead 34-7. Sample hit Luke Ludolph on a 50-yard score on a fourth down play early in the fourth, making the score 34-13. The teams traded scores with Sample's five-yard run bringing Benedictine within 40-20 with 8:17 to play. The final points of the season for Benedictine came when Andrew Soulis recorded a safety with a tackle in the endzone on a rushing play.

Lakeland accumulated 571 yards of offense, winning the conference title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Playoffs. Sample finished with 82 yards rushing and 252 through the air as Benedictine finished with 359 for the day. Sample accounted for three touchdowns with one passing and two rushing but threw four interceptions. Ludolph caught five passes for 91 yards while Elijah Walker accumulated 93 yards receiving on three catches.

Maison Bittner and Micayel McKechnie led the defense with 11 tackles each. Danny Drummond racked up three tackles for loss with a sack. Lakeland's quarterback accounted for seven touchdowns with 137 yards on the ground and 383 through the air. Dane Eimer collected the lone turnover with an interception while Niko Paaloalo forced a fumble and logged a sack.

The loss halted a six-game win streak in the regular season and a 10-game conference win streak dating to 2014. Benedictine finishes the season 7-3.
