The Benedictine University Softball team (21-6, 12-2) traveled north for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, opposing the Milwaukee School of Engineering Radiers (10-18, 3-11). BenU prevailed in both games, shutting out the Raiders 6-0 and 2-0.
Game OneHolly Haberkorn starred for the Eagles in game one, tossing seven shutout innings for her tenth win of the season. However, her performance in the circle was just part of it, as the sophomore hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning to put BenU up 1-0.
The Eagles took the momentum of Haberkorn's home run and generated more second-inning offense. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Kelsey Jefferies stole two bases, with
Angie Malsack stealing home on one and Jefferies herself stealing home on another.
Chelsea White (ground out) and
Sarah Koch (single) knocked in runs later in the inning to cap the scoring at five.
While Benedictine was held to just seven hits, they did plate one more run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch.
Melissa Stoch recorded a perfect 2-for-2 day with a run, while
Shannon Fritsche recorded a double. White, Stoch, and Malsack all stole bases, while Jefferies swiped three of her own.
Game TwoInside the circle was where the story was once again, as
Melissa Guzior put together one of her best outings as an Eagle. The junior tosesed a complete game shutout for her seventh win of the season, allowing just three hits and one walk.
The only offense for BenU came in the top of the second, as White drove in two runs on a single. While BenU's offense was stifled for most of the game, Guzior retired 15 consecutive batters extending from the first through the sixth inning to keep the Raiders offense at bay. MSOE finally threatned in the seventh, but a relay on a double to right field with Koch, second baseman White, and catcher
Kailee Cable sent down a runner trying to score, ending the game and perserving the shutout.
At the plate, just Koch and
Kelli Holstine recorded hits aside from White's single. Both teams recorded just three hits on the day.
The Eagles will take the field next on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex against Wheaton College. Live audio, video, and statistics will be available at
