Football Drops Home Opener

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University football team opened the home portion of the season by dropping a 21-13 decision to Carroll University on Saturday night.

Benedictine raced to a 13-0 first half advantage, but Carroll scored 21 unanswered in the second half to record the win. The first drive of the contest resulted in a touchdown as Benedictine marched 74 yards on 13 plays to open a 7-0 edge when Jesse Kilbourn caught a four-yard pass from Ryan Sample. Jarrett Lecas picked off a pass early in the second and returned it 71 yards to make the score 13-0.

Carroll turned a Benedictine turnover on the opening possession of the second half into the first touchdown and then struck again rapidly after a three-and-out to take a 14-13 lead. The Pioneers extended the margin to 21-13 with a touchdown at the 6:03 mark. Benedictine proceeded to use 13 plays to drive all the way down to the Carroll seven-yard line, but a fourth down pass fell incomplete to end the game.

Benedictine finished with 293 yards of offense after putting up over 100 yards in the first quarter. The Eagles accounted for 131 on the ground and 162 through the air. Each team turned the ball over twice. Sample completed 16 passes for 162 yards and a score while adding a team best 78 yards on the ground. Matt Fleming caught six passes for 68 yards. Niko Paaloalo led the defense with 10 tackles while Bryndon Williams added nine and Micayel McKechnie eight. Jack Nudo also recorded an interception.

Benedictine (1-1) travels to Adrian next Saturday afternoon.
