Men's Soccer Edges Lake Forest

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Three different individuals scored goals as the Benedictine University men's soccer team edged Lake Forest College on the road by a 3-2 score on Wednesday.

Benedictine grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first half. Erik Stammer netted the first goal of his college career in the 17th minute to hand Benedictine the early lead. Jonny Lehman poked home a feed from Nick Kapetanos in the 32nd minute to pad the lead. Lake Forest sliced into the deficit early in the second half, but Nick Kapetanos provided the third goal in the 67th minute.

"We came out and put together a very strong first half, with good intensity and execution of our scouting report," head coach Rich Nassif said. "The effort gave us a 2-0 lead and multiple other chances to extend the lead. I really liked how we held Lake Forest – a team averaging over four goals a game – to just three shots in the first half. The second half told a different story. Our intensity dropped off and we let them believe they were in the game. We need to be better at putting teams away."

Each team totaled seven shots on goal with Benedictine holding a slim 13-12 edge overall. Kapetanos posted six shots with three on goal. Yair Ortega added three shots in a reserve role. Steve Mack stopped five shots in goal.

"It was great to see three different goal scorers, something we have been waiting for out of our team," Nassif said. "Erik (Stammer) put in some tremendous defensive work to score his first career goal and Jonny Lehman's goal was the product of some nifty play from Nick Kapetanos. We need to keep that balanced attack going while demanding more urgency in our defensive half. We learned some lessons today and I like the momentum we have going into Saturday."

Benedictine (3-3) plays at the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the University of Chicago, on Saturday afternoon.
