Football Wins Opener

PELLA, Iowa - The Benedictine University football team opened the 2015 season by recording a 21-19 road win over Central College on Saturday night. Central won eight games last season.

Ryan Sample debuted as the starting quarterback by completing 23 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Benedictine held a 21-6 lead but had to hang on for the win. Facing a third and nine from the three-yard line, Sample connected with Omar Lopez for a 23-yard gain, continuing a drive that would use 13 plays to tick out the clock on the victory.

Sample opened the scoring by hitting Matt Fleming for a 65-yard score with less than a minute to go in the first quarter. After a Central touchdown and a missed PAT, Benedictine marched 73 yards on 12 plays to take a 14-6 lead. Derrick Miles plunged in from a yard out for the score with just a minute left until the half. Sample and Fleming hooked up for a 41-yard score on the first play of the fourth to extend the lead. Central scored on consecutive possessions, but a two-point conversion attempt for the tie failed.

Benedictine managed just 67 yards on the ground, but totaled 407 yards. Both Fleming and Lopez notched over 100 yards receiving. Fleming caught four passes for 115 yards and two scores while Lopez reeled in nine passes for 113 yards. Micayel McKechnie led the defense with 11 tackles while Danny Drummond added eight and Connor Whitman notched an interception.

Benedictine (1-0) hosts Carroll next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
